Questions about our dynamic electricity tariffs

How do the tado° Home 'Monthly' and 'Hourly' tariffs differ?

With the tado° Home Monthly tariff, we adjust your price monthly to the actual electricity exchange price.

With the tado° Home Hourly tariff, we even adjust your price hourly to the actual electricity exchange price. You can see the hourly prices a day in advance in the tado° app. There we will also show you a forecast for the next seven days.

Both tariffs are billed monthly and can be canceled on a monthly basis.

Are there certain requirements for dynamic electricity tariffs?

There are no requirements for the tado° Home Monthly tariff. You can sign up for the tariff immediately.

If or when you have a smart meter, we will automatically switch billing to hourly pricing so you can benefit from maximum savings. Without a smart meter we cannot offer you the tado° Home Hourly tariff.

Can I switch between the Home Hourly and Home Monthly plans at any time?

Whether we bill the tado° Home tariff with monthly or hourly dynamic pricing depends on whether or not you have a smart meter. It is not possible to switch between tariffs due to this requirement as you would not be able to take advantage your smart meter benefits in the tado° Home Monthly tariff, for example.

Where and when can I see my consumption data in the tado° Home Hourly tariff?

The grid operators automatically submits your usage data (load profile) to us via the smart meter. You can view this data at any time. You will also receive an overview from us with your monthly billing.

What impact does the dynamic electricity tariff have on the environment?

With a dynamic electricity tariff you promote the efficient use of renewable energy on the grid. This is because electricity is usually cheap when there is a lot of wind and solar energy available.

Can I cancel the tariff if I don't like it?

If you are not satisfied with your tado° Home tariff, you can cancel monthly. This applies to both tado° Home Monthly and tado° Home Hourly. So you don't take any risks.

Questions about price

What exactly is meant by the 'market price'?

Two stock market products are considered for the calculation: Month Future Base (base load) and Peak (electricity consumption between 8am and 8pm from Monday to Friday). The average of the last 7 trading days of the previous month is used for the next delivery month. The base product is weighted at 70% and the peak product at 30%.

How is the price made up?

The grid usage fees, taxes, levies and duties charged by your grid operator are passed along to you at a 1:1 ratio. An additional 1.785 cent/kWh gross is charged as a procurement cost for green electricity certificates, along with other procurement costs. These procurement costs are part of the energy price (see tariff page).

With an hourly dynamic electricity tariff, how do I keep track of my monthly costs when the price fluctuates?

With a smart meter and the tado° app, you always have everything in view: your previous usage, the current prices and the expected prices for the following week.

Is there a price cap for the hourly dynamic electricity tariff?

No, there is no price cap, so your electricity costs can also be high at times when the market price is high.

Questions about smart meters

What is a smart meter?

A smart meter is an intelligent electricity meter that measures your usage in real time and automatically transmits it to us. This means you'll see exactly how much electricity you've used each hour and we can bill you by the hour.

Compared to conventional electricity meters that are only read once a year, with this you'll get a better overview of your energy consumption.

Can I use tado°’s dynamic tariffs without a smart meter?

You don’t need a smart meter for the tado° Home Monthly tariff. However, in order to use the tado° Home Hourly tariff, the smart meter is a prerequisite.

You can apply for a smart meter directly with your grid operator. Until your smart meter is installed, we'll put you on our monthly tariff with monthly price adjustments. We will then automatically switch your contract over to our hourly tariff, without any additional effort. Learn more about the smart meters here.
