The company integrates the tado° energy tariff information and electricity price forecast into the tado° App for maximum price transparency and cost savings for tado° HOURLY tariff customers in Germany and Austria. tado° also adds PV system yield forecasting services for heat pumps and electric vehicles to extract the maximum value out of the free electricity generated by a home’s solar panels — without owners having to lift a finger. This is another crucial plank of tado°’s vision for inter-connected and more sustainable home energy management systems that smartly reduce electricity consumption from the grid, drive forward the green energy transition and cut bills for millions of families across Europe.

Energy price forecasts and historic consumption data easily accessible in the tado° App

The tado° App makes it easier than ever for tado° dynamic energy tariff customers in Germany and Austria to stay on top of their energy consumption and costs. Easily accessible in a new widget on the home screen of the app, tado°s popular real-time daily energy price overview is now available on customers’ smartphones. It now also includes a forecast for the next day even before the energy prices set by the European Energy Exchange (EPEX Spot Exchange) get published at 2pm each day. Additionally, the app provides a simple 7-day energy price range forecast that allows homeowners to plan their energy consumption even better, for example the next charging session for their electric vehicle.

The tado° App not only helps improve short and long-term energy consumption planning but also offers historic insights into how successfully customers managed to shift their consumption to times when energy is cheapest. They can track how much energy they used at what price on an hourly basis for each day and get a daily overview. 

tado°s PV system forecasting makes the best use of free electricity

tado°’s Balance for Heat Pumps service and its Smart Charging App are now both able to predict the amount of electricity a home’s solar panels will produce the following day and then ensure, respectively, that the heat pump operates or EV charges during those hours to make the best use of the free electricity being generated.

Both services rely on weather forecasts localized to the location of the house, along with details of their PV system. All homeowners have to do is enter the relevant information of their PV system, including its peak generation capacity, address, direction and roof tilt, when they set up their system and tado° automatically does the rest – every day.

Each day tado° then checks what the local weather forecast will be and estimates the amount of electricity and the time it will be generated and adjusts the schedule for the heat pump operation through the tado° Heat Pump Optimizer X and the Balance for Heat Pumps subscription service, or Smart Charging App for EVs. The result is a more efficient use of ‘homegrown’ sustainable energy plus savings not only on the cost of electricity but also grid fees in countries such as Germany.

PV system yield forecasting is in addition to the optimization and smart scheduling both Balance for Heat Pumps and the Smart Charging App already offer, where a homeowner’s electricity tariff (and outside temperature for Balance) is analyzed and a heat pump’s operations or the charging of an EV is automatically adjusted to the cheapest times of the day.
