With this leadership change, tado° is advancing its development as a provider of energy management solutions for residential buildings.
Munich, 2. August 2023: tado° has appointed Philip Beckmann as its new CEO from 15 August 2023. Beckmann, who previously served on the management board of E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH, succeeds Toon Bouten, who has been instrumental in the company’s emergence as the European market leader for intelligent indoor climate management. Having joined tado° in 2017, Bouten is now retiring.
Twelve years ago, tado° embarked on a mission to make heating and air conditioning systems in private households more energy-efficient, and in doing so created a new market. To date, tado° has sold over 3 million smart thermostats, enabling customers to cut their energy consumption by an average of 22 percent. Now the company wants to go one step further and double the benefit to customers by means of dynamic energy pricing. To accelerate this step in its development, last year tado° acquired aWATTar GmbH, a pioneer in the field of dynamic energy tariffs. Combined with energy management solutions from tado°, these dynamic tariffs will automatically shift customers’ energy consumption across numerous appliances to times when energy prices are low, allowing them to reduce their energy costs by more than a third on average. With this purpose in mind, tado° is now bringing Philip Beckmann, an experienced manager from the energy industry, onto the management team.
“By taking this new strategic step, we continue to drive forward the original mission of tado°: to reduce energy costs for households,” says Christian Deilmann, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of tado°. “We want to minimise costs for customers not only through lower energy consumption, but also with smart energy tariffs – while also helping to establish a renewable energy supply in Europe. Philip is a perfect fit to join the tado° team and help drive our development. We are very much looking forward to working together!”
Philip Beckmann brings over 20 years of experience in the European energy industry. Having started his career at Boston Consulting Group, he played a decisive role in shaping the transformation of E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH in a number of management positions over the past twelve years and successfully drove growth in the corporate and private customer segments. During this time, the topic of energy efficiency has grown into a passion to which he can now devote himself from a new perspective at tado°. “The founders’ vision of reducing energy costs in households through efficient energy management is more relevant than ever. It has become a necessity for the wider population, and the leverage is there to make a big impact. I am delighted to join tado° at such an exciting time and to shape the next phase of growth as part of the team. Efficient green energy management – this will benefit our customers and the environment alike.”
Toon Bouten, who became CEO in 2017, looks back on a very successful period: “I am grateful to have been part of an exciting journey. tado° is now the European market leader for intelligent indoor climate management, an achievement we have reached together as an outstanding team.”

About aWATTar
aWATTar was founded in 2014 by Simon Schmitz and Peter Netbal in Austria. As the first energy supplier with a dynamic tariff, aWATTar enables electricity consumption to be shifted to the hours of the day when a lot of renewable energy is produced and fed into the grid. The more green electricity is produced, the cheaper it becomes. A surplus can even lead to negative prices, which aWATTar passes on to the customer directly and transparently. By combining their own services with tado° solutions and through partnerships with manufacturers, heating systems, electric cars and other devices automatically consume electricity when it is particularly green and cheap. Every aWATTar customer thus supports the expansion of renewable energies, while aWATTar contributes to balancing supply and demand on the electricity exchange.
