With the tado° Smart Charging app, households save an average of €300 per year when charging from their home wallbox.
Munich, 31 August 2023 – tado°, Europe’s leading provider of energy management solutions for private households, today launched tado° Smart Charging, an intelligent solution for home charging stations. The app takes advantage of volatile electricity exchange prices and automatically schedules home charging at times when energy prices are low, regardless of when the electric car is connected to the wallbox. In this way, households can save an average of €300 (30%) on annual charging costs for electric vehicles while also maximising the share of renewables in their energy consumption. With this new offer, tado° aims to support the expansion of green mobility and drive forward the energy transition. tado° Smart Charging is now available for free in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
How the tado° Smart Charging app works
Typically, three quarters of electric car charging is done at home compared to just one quarter on the road. With tado° Smart Charging, saving energy while charging at home becomes easy. After downloading and installing, users connect the app to the car via the vehicle user account and set their charging preferences, such as the time their car needs to be ready to go. An algorithm then automatically schedules the charging process and shifts energy consumption to the greenest and cheapest times, based on electricity prices over the next 24 hours. Only then does the charging process start, typically taking 45 minutes, regardless of when the vehicle is connected to the charging station. In this way, users can avoid the most expensive hours and save around 30% of their annual charging costs on average. However, vehicle owners can also forego part of these savings and set a minimum charge level in the charging plan without optimised charging. Then, regardless of the electricity price, the battery will always be charged to at least a quarter of its capacity, for example.
Compatibility and availability
The tado° Smart Charging app can be used to charge electric vehicles from most major brands, including Tesla, Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW, Skoda, Seat, Land Rover and many more. To get started, users simply select the car brand in the app and connect the car via the user account, with a username and password, to let it communicate with the app. For some brands, such as Mercedes, Peugeot or Kia, a smart wallbox must also be installed and connected – those from Zaptec, Wallbox or Easee are compatible with the app.
The tado° Smart Charging app reveals its full savings potential in combination with the aWATTar HOURLY tariff from tado° or with hourly dynamic tariffs from other energy providers.
The tado° Smart Charging app is available for free in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Spain. It can be downloaded now from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in German or English, with more languages to follow.
tado° is driving forward the mobility and energy transition
Sales of electric cars in Europe are expected to double by 2028, according to Statista Market Insights. “E-mobility is a crucial part of the energy transition,” notes Christian Deilmann, Co-Founder and CPO of tado°. Electric cars offer three times the efficiency of conventional petrol or diesel vehicles. Moreover, green electricity from solar or wind power plants can be directly converted into mobility. “That's why tado° has set itself the goal of greatly boosting the attractiveness of electric cars by radically lowering charging costs – while also helping to establish a renewable energy supply in Europe,” says Deilmann.
tado° reduces energy costs as well as consumption with three new products
Over the last 10 years, tado° has primarily helped its customers to reduce the amount of energy they consume for heating and cooling. tado° Smart Charging is one of three new products that now enable customers to significantly cut the cost of their energy. Besides the smart charging solution for electric vehicles, tado° has introduced a new heat pump control, the tado° Heat Pump Connector, and announced the launch of the hourly dynamic energy tariff aWATTar HOURLY.
Using energy management to profit from volatile energy market prices
In most households, 80 to 90% of energy consumption is for space heating and charging electric cars. With intelligent energy management, there are tremendous savings to be made here. The expansion of renewable energy sources (especially solar and wind) is making electricity prices increasingly volatile. At times when a lot of green electricity is produced and fed into the grid, electricity becomes very cheap. A surplus during particularly sunny and windy hours can even result in negative prices.
Hourly dynamic electricity tariffs, which pass on prices directly and transparently from the European Energy Exchange, allow consumers to benefit from these fluctuating electricity prices. They give users the opportunity to shift their energy consumption to cheaper hours and significantly reduce their energy costs. Automatic energy management solutions for heat pumps, electric cars and air conditioning systems perform this task for customers. They take full advantage of the varying prices of hourly dynamic electricity tariffs, working intelligently and in the background, without customers having to make any compromises on their level of comfort. As a result, customers substantially cut their annual energy costs while also helping to prevent green electricity from wind and solar power plants from going to waste.
