tado° introduces smart heat pump control
With the tado° Heat Pump Connector and the tado° Balance app feature, households cut their heat pump operating costs by around €430 per year.
Munich, 31 August 2023 – tado°, Europe’s leading provider of energy management solutions for private households, is expanding its product portfolio by introducing the tado° Heat Pump Connector and the app feature tado° Balance Heat Pump, a smart heat pump controller. The new solution enables households to intelligently and efficiently control how their heat pumps operate to achieve greater economic efficiency. In combination with hourly dynamic electricity tariffs, the annual electricity costs of heat pumps can typically be reduced by €430 (27%). The smart heat pump control shifts energy consumption for heating and hot water to the cheapest and greenest hours of the day. In this way, tado° is laying the groundwork for climate-neutral and low-cost energy supply for residential buildings.
How the tado° Heat Pump Connector works
The new heat pump control from tado° reduces the operating costs of heat pumps and thus improves the economic efficiency not only of new purchases, but also of existing devices. Over a period of 10 years, the savings typically total up to €4,300.
For installation, the tado° Heat Pump Connector is simply connected to the heat pump by cable using the port of the remote control unit. The tado° unit communicates with the heat pump via BUS protocol. In addition, customers connect the tado° Internet Bridge to their home WiFi router and install the tado° app on their smartphone. After approximately 30 minutes, they have full control over the heat pump using the app.
The new app feature tado° Balance Heat Pump makes use of hourly dynamic electricity tariffs to reduce electricity costs. tado° Balance controls the heat pump by accessing electricity price data for the next 24 hours and shifting its consumption accordingly: phases for pre-heating rooms or filling hot water tanks or buffer storage tanks are shifted to times with favourable electricity prices. This significantly lowers the operating costs. tado° Balance works with the aWATTar HOURLY tariff from tado° or with hourly dynamic tariffs from other energy providers.
Compatibility, prices and availability
From 30 August 2023, the tado° Heat Pump Connector can be ordered on tado.com in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and other markets in Europe for €299. It is currently compatible with the heat pump brands Vaillant, Atlantic, Saunier Duval and Fujitsu, both for new purchases and as a retrofit solution for existing heat pumps. Support for other brands will follow in the coming months. Customers can optionally add the app feature tado° Balance Heat Pump for €49.99 per year or €5.99 per month. This can be cancelled annually or monthly and is offered free of charge for the first year.
The energy transition must be shown to be economically viable
Heat pumps are highly efficient heating systems that require only around one third of the energy consumed by gas or oil heating systems. Most of the heat energy for the home is provided by environmental waste heat from boreholes in the ground or from the outside air. According to Germany’s Federal Association of the Heating Industry (BDH), sales of heat pumps are growing by more than 50% annually. “Despite government subsidies, the cost of purchasing heat pumps remains high and the economic viability calculation is not yet as positive as it could be,” explains Christian Deilmann, Co-Founder and CPO at tado°. “We see the reduction of operating costs as a lever to significantly boost the attractiveness and ultimately the spread of climate-friendly heat pumps.”
tado° reduces energy costs as well as consumption with three new products
Over the last 10 years, tado° has primarily helped its customers to reduce the amount of energy they consume for heating and cooling. The tado° heat pump control is one of three new products that now enable customers to significantly cut the cost of their energy. Besides the tado° Heat Pump Connector and the new app feature tado° Balance Heat Pump, tado° has introduced tado° Smart Charging, an app for electric car charging management, and announced the launch of the hourly dynamic energy tariff aWATTar HOURLY. The combination of energy efficiency and energy price cuts saves households several hundred euros per year – over a thousand in some cases.
Using energy management to profit from volatile energy market prices
In most households, 80 to 90% of energy consumption is for space heating and charging electric cars. With intelligent energy management, there are tremendous savings to be made here. The expansion of renewable energy sources (especially solar and wind) is making electricity prices increasingly volatile. At times when a lot of green electricity is produced and fed into the grid, electricity becomes very cheap. A surplus during particularly sunny and windy hours can even result in negative prices.
Hourly dynamic electricity tariffs, which pass on prices directly and transparently from the European Energy Exchange, allow consumers to benefit from these fluctuating electricity prices. They give users the opportunity to shift their energy consumption to cheaper hours and significantly reduce their energy costs. Automatic energy management solutions for heat pumps, electric cars and air conditioning systems perform this task for customers. They take full advantage of the varying prices of hourly dynamic electricity tariffs, working intelligently and in the background, without customers having to make any compromises on their level of comfort. As a result, customers substantially cut their annual energy costs while also helping to prevent green electricity from wind and solar power plants from going to waste.
