London, 04.09.2024 – tado°, the home energy management solutions expert, today unveils its new tado° X product range that will bring savings and simplicity to smart heating in the UK from November.

As households brace themselves for a 10 per cent rise in the UK energy price cap from October 1, the new tado° X range of Smart Thermostats and Sensors, Smart Radiator Thermostats and Heat Pump Optimizer X promises savings of 19 per cent^[1] on average and control over heating bills.

tado° X is easier to set up, easy to use with its smart scheduling and other features allowing people to just set their desired heating temperatures and forget, and runs on Matter over Thread to integrate seamlessly with other smart home products. Its Thread mesh network also offers greater radio range and coverage for larger properties.

The full range of new tado° X products are… 

tado° X also integrates all the award-winning energy management features to cut consumption and bills that the company is famous for: Smart Scheduling, Geofencing to turn down the heating when everyone is away, Open Window Detection, Energy IQ information and tips on cutting consumption, Weather Adaptation and Air Comfort. The X devices have new displays for a better user experience, while the Smart Radiator Thermostat X comes with a battery that can be recharged by a USB-C cable for increased convenience.

“A survey of tado° customers^[2] in the UK revealed that 84 per cent of them do not expect energy prices to fall to pre-Ukraine invasion levels within the next few years, while two-thirds are more aware or worried about their heating bills than they were five years ago.

“October’s price cap rise of 10 per cent is unwelcome news for all households and another indicator of why it is important to take control of your heating consumption and bills. With savings of 19 per cent on average in the UK, the new tado° X products will pay for themselves within a few months and then go on to save customers money as well as cutting their carbon footprint.

“The innovations we have created in our tado° X products bring simplicity for smart heating to life. In the past smart thermostats were largely adopted by those focussed on smart tech but tado° X makes these devices more accessible to many more people and will have a bigger impact on bills and the renewable energy transition.”

tado° X is future-proofed by its adoption of the Matter standard, meaning greater interoperability with other smart home products and platforms, and can be controlled by voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. Customers can either use a Bridge X or the Wireless Smart Thermostat X to establish their own Thread mesh network for device communication, or use a third party Thread border router such as Apple HomePod for true flexibility.

The new Heat Pump Optimizer X brings control and greater efficiency to heat pumps and when combined with tado°’s Balance subscription service and dynamic tariffs it can lead to increased savings. The Heat Pump Optimizer X also works with tado°’s Smart Radiator Thermostat X and Wireless or Wired Smart Thermostat X (for most underfloor heating setups) to deliver even more efficiencies and give temperature control for individual rooms and zones.

Availability and pricing

The full product range will be launched in the UK at the beginning of November.

So how does tado° X work?

X works on the Thread protocol, offering a more stable mesh network than WiFi and with a greater range across larger homes. The tado° X range means that for the first time customers can buy the individual components that best suit their needs to build out a smart heating set-up. If they already have an active Thread mesh network through a compatible Thread border router (e.g. an Apple Homepod Mini), they will not have to purchase the Bridge X Thread border router. However if they are starting their Thread mesh network from scratch, customers can use the Bridge X Thread border router as part of a starter kit. In either case, additional Bridge Xs can extend the range of their Thread mesh network in larger homes and make it more robust.

Matter is the new unified connectivity standard being adopted by more than 240 member companies, including Amazon, Google, Apple, Samsung, Ikea, Philips Hue and Somfy. It means Matter over Thread devices from different manufacturers can communicate with each other and tado° X products easily integrate with customers’ smart home ecosystem.

The tado° Wireless Smart Thermostat X, Wired Smart Thermostat X and Smart Radiator Thermostat X work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home voice assistants. 

tado°’s Smart Thermostats and Smart Radiator Thermostats can be installed by anyone at home, guided step-by-step in the tado° app, in less than 30 minutes. With wired and wireless options, smart thermostats can be installed in over 95 per cent of homes across Europe. Any radiator with an existing thermostatic radiator valve can be upgraded to a smart energy saving radiator by simply screwing in a Smart Radiator Thermostat from tado°.

Wireless Smart Thermostat X and Wired Smart Thermostat X

The Wireless and Wired versions of Smart Thermostat X can replace traditional thermostats to control a boiler, a zone valve or underfloor heating. Both versions are compatible with two types of heating interfaces – relay (on/off, mechanical) and Opentherm (digital) – and can control the heating by themselves or with Smart Radiator Thermostat X to give room control.

Wireless Smart Thermostat X is compatible with most UK homes and also offers hot water control for homes with a hot water tank. It has a Thread border router built in so there is no requirement to purchase Bridge X unless there is a need for extended range.

Wired Smart Thermostat X can replace a traditional wired thermostat used with a combi boiler. It requires a Thread border router, such as Bridge X or a compatible third party device such as an Apple HomePod Mini.

Smart Radiator Thermostat X

With the new innovative T-shape design that means it is more compact and an improved high-resolution touch display, Smart Radiator Thermostat X can bring heating control to each individual room in a house. It is easier to mount to most radiators with a thermostatic valve and is supplied with six adaptors and a selector for easy installation. Smart Radiator Thermostat X also comes with an easily detachable battery pack that is recharged using a USB-C cable, saving on the hassle and expense of changing batteries as well as meaning the main housing does not need to be disconnected from the radiator. Smart Radiator Thermostat X also has a child lock.

Wireless Temperature Sensor X

Mirroring the design of the Wired and Wireless Smart Thermostat X, the Wireless Temperature Sensor X can be located anywhere in a room to provide a temperature reading from that spot to then set the heating behaviour. It can also be used for the central control of multiple Smart Radiator Thermostats X in one room (which is particularly useful if the radiators are located in inconvenient locations) and with the Heat Pump Optimizer X.

Heat Pump Optimizer X

Heat Pump Optimizer X excels through working with the main heat pump controller to allow customers to simply set smart scheduling for heating and hot water as well as manually adjust temperatures in the tado° app.

With the addition of Wireless or Wired Smart Radiator Thermostat X, it allows the individual control of the heating per room in homes with heat pumps – which is unique to tado°.

When used in conjunction with tado°’s Balance for Heat Pumps loadshifting service and dynamic energy tariffs, the Optimizer X can shift operation times of a heat pump to periods when electricity prices are lower each day. It applies to space heating and domestic hot water heating.

Heat Pump Optimizer X is compatible with the principal manufacturers in the European market: Atlantic, Vaillant, Saunier Duval, Fujitsu, Daikin. Compatibility with Panasonic is due in November and development for other brands is continuing. It can also operate as a Thread border router to communicate with the other tado° X products and third-party Matter devices in a customer’s home.

The tado° eco-system

tado° X products may be new but the features customers have grown to know and love are still in place. tado° allows households to control temperatures from anywhere, anytime, via its smartphone app or by voice with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit. Key skills include Smart Scheduling, Geofencing to turn down the heating when everyone is away, Open Window Detection, Weather Adaptation and Air Comfort. tado’s Auto-Assist subscription service (£3.99 a month or £29.99 a year) automates the Geofencing and Open Window Detection features as well as adding the Energy IQ service for insights into energy consumption and savings. It also boasts Care & Protect, which helps prevent system malfunctions by keeping an eye on the heating around the clock and notifying customers of any unusual performance. These features can lead to energy savings, on average, of 19 per cent^[1] whilst cutting a home’s carbon footprint. 

tado° X can also act as the gateway to tado°’s full range of energy management solutions that, through combining smart thermostats, app control and smart features, heat pump optimization and dynamic energy tariffs can save a home hundreds of pounds a year. tado° offers these solutions, as well as its Smart Charging App for electric vehicles.

Compatibility with current tado° V3+ devices

Because tado° X is built on a completely new and different technical platform to V3+ and previous tado° generations, it is not compatible with these devices. V3+ products will continue to be sold, supported and their operation will not be affected.
